There are palliative care specialists who can provide a combination of physical, emotional, social or spiritual care that focuses on maintaining a patient’s well-being as much as possible. They include doctors, nurses, Social workers and others who have specialized training in giving this type of care. This support can be given over the course of months or years.
Palliative therapy can include radiation, or medicines for pain, nausea, shortness of breath and other symptoms. These treatments aim to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. They are often given alongside some, or all, of the treatments described on this website.
